Step back to the 1940s at Milton Keynes Museum

Despite being an era famous for ration books, there will be no rationing of entertainment at Milton Keynes Museum’s upcoming 1940s event on 3rd & 4th September.

Visitors will be able to step back in history and absorb all the sights and sounds from the decade.

The Oxfordshire Home Guard preserves and promotes the memory of those who volunteered to defend our shores during the war, and they’ll be dressed up and ready to explain about the war all weekend, together with the Herts Home Guard who will also be on site.

A Home Front Village will be set up for inspection, complete with RAF Station, and you’ll be able to learn more about the role played by the WVS (Women’s Voluntary Service) too.

A display of items from the Merchant Navy will take attention, and Neil Storey and Denis Turner will be sharing stories from the era.

Learn how people made the most of their free time by ‘holidaying at home,’ and check out the latest fashions with a display of wartime wedding dresses bringing a little glamour to the event.

There will be an ARP Post, a Bomber Command, an Allied Assortment and a number of displays.

You can show off your fancy footwork with some marvellous music too; with the return of singers Miss Lola Lamour, Johnny Victory and James Cooper-Watson who will invite you to dance to the sounds of the dance hall, jive to Glenn Miller and sing-a-long to the wartime songs loved by all in the Vintage Tea Room, and weather permitting over at the bandstand.

And war on not, there is no excuse for not keeping a tidy home – Mrs Skivvy will be sharing tips on keeping things spick and span!

There will be lots of traders to splash the pounds, shillings and pence on, and when you need a brew and a slice of cake to sustain you, the Vintage Tea Room will be ready and waiting, and snack wagons will be open for business.

And on Saturday it will be all eyes to the skies as, weather permitting, the Museum will welcome a fabulous flyover by a Lancaster during the afternoon.
