Europe has a vast array of volcanic terroirs, stretching from Tenerife in the west, through central France, down into north-east, central and southern Italy, across Hungary, and finally to Greece and the island of Santorini. Wines have been produced in many of these remarkable regions for centuries.
Volcanic eruptions occur somewhere on the planet almost every week, many of them unnoticed as they happen deep underground or beneath the ocean. Yet these dramatic geological events do far more than reshape the landscape. Over time, they enrich the surrounding soils with minerals and nutrients, creating unique vineyard environments and often reducing the need for artificial fertilisers, supporting more sustainable viticulture.
The resulting terroirs can be extraordinary. From windswept, low-growing vines clinging to barren islands, to dramatic mountainside vineyards perched on steep terraces, some landscapes appear almost lunar in appearance. Volcanic soils are typically rich in minerals, which play an important role in the growth and development of grapevines. When combined with the skill and craftsmanship of dedicated winemakers, these distinctive terroirs can produce wines with remarkable character, vibrant minerality and impressive ageing potential.
Regions such as Santorini in Greece, Mount Etna in Sicily and the Canary Islands have long fascinated wine lovers, producing wines that often show striking freshness, structure and mineral complexity.
So why not come along and discover why those in the know – including the growers and winemakers working in these dramatic landscapes – increasingly recognise the exceptional quality of volcanic wines, and why they deserve a place in every wine cellar and on every great restaurant wine list.
