Come and Sing Walton's Belshazzar's Feast
Join our Musical Director Mark Jordan and Assistant Musical Director Alex Aitken for a rewarding day focussed on one of the masterpieces of early twentieth-century English choral music – Walton’s mighty dramatic cantata Belshazzar’s Feast. The day will culminate with an informal performance to friends and family.
Few choral works give singers the sheer adrenaline rush of this remarkable work that is often cost prohibitive to perform. Walton’s musical language combines thrilling counterpoint with jazz-inflected rhythms, jagged syncopations, fiery rhythmic vitality and explosively brilliant choral writing.
An immediate sensation at its 1931 première, the work ultimately became a landmark of British choral music, but was much larger in scale than the BBC (who commissioned it) ever imagined.
We couldn’t resist the chance to spend a day working on Walton’s masterpiece.
The ticket price includes score hire and refreshments – but bring your own lunch.
And did we mention that there’ll be cake?
