Paintings of the River Great Ouse by Richard Allen

Many of my paintings are of, or painted near the River Ouse. It is a landscape that I have only recently started to explore, but I find it’s gentle, timeless and sometimes very open scenery a great source of inspiration. I know that many people pass it by in a search for more obviously picturesque locations, those that conform to the idea of a typical pastoral English county scene, but they are missing out.

I try and avoid the obvious views and prefer more unassuming places that I find on sketching trips. I then return to favoured spots with my oil paints. I paint on location. Some paintings are completed before I leave whilst others need more work back at the studio. They are also used as the basis for larger paintings. I do use photos for inspiration, but only when supported by colour notes or sketches made outside. The colour in photographs does not match what we see with our own eyes.
