Milton Keynes is not the traditional type of area you’d think of for good mountain bike trails – but you’d be wrong! It actually has some of the best trails south of the Peak District and you can combine them with some great places to stay, visit and shop!
The woodland areas of Bow Brickhill, Aspley Heath and Woburn Sands offer different types of terrain, technical obstacles and challenging trails to keep you amused all day. There are trails suitable for all types of ability from bridleways for the beginners to trails for those used to riding Black routes at the trail centres. The woods are all located just 10 minutes from the city centre.
For the seasoned mountain biker there are cross country trails to rival anywhere in South East England, with over 90m of ascent and some of the best singletrack where you can ride all day stopping only at the local pub for refreshments. Woburn Trails boast’s some of the largest, safest drops seen anywhere in the south of England and one of the best features is the play area with downhill runs and jumps – just don’t forget your helmet and body armour!
For beginners, the area of the Woburn Trails and the Greensands Ridge includes some easier bridleways and waymarked mountain bike trails for a leisurely ride so it’s not too challenging, and you can stop at the local café for a break and some refreshment.
You can easily spend a whole day exploring these areas and getting to grips to the challenging terrain either on your own, with your family or with a larger group of riders. Access is easy, there are plenty of parking areas at different points around the woods – but please be aware some of the routes are also used by walkers and horseriders, so be careful.
DMK member, Get Mountain Biking, offers guided rides of the area, mountain bike training courses, women only training courses and corporate teambuilding events. For more information visit www.getmountainbiking.co.uk.
