The Open University Choir summer concert

Francesco Durante: Magnificat (previously attributed to Pergolesi)
Antonio Vivaldi: Gloria
George Frideric Handel: Concerto in D major

Bill Strang: conductor
Thursday 28 June, 1pm–2pm, Hub Theatre, Walton Hall

On Thursday 28 June the Open University Choir presents a programme of sunny, mainly Italian music for the summer term.
For most of the 20th century Francesco Durante’s Magnificat in B flat was mistakenly attributed to his pupil Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. The son of a woolcomber, Durante was by the 1720s the foremost teacher of composition in Naples; the almost exact contemporary of Bach and Handel, he had none of the former’s thoroughness in working out contrapuntal puzzles, nor the latter’s flair for high drama; Durante’s is music of a lighter, more charming kind which wears its learning with easy elegance.

Vivaldi’s Gloria RV 589, with its jubilant trumpet gestures, may have been written to mark the defeat of the Ottoman Empire by the Venetian Republic in 1716. And it was almost certainly intended for the excellent performers of the Pio Ospedale della Pietà where he acted variously as violin teacher, string tutor, organiser and later composer of instrumental music – only due to the absence through illness of another employee was he required to compose vocal music. Always a freelance so that he could hare around Italy and beyond, directing productions of his many operas, he exasperated the governors of the Ospedale. It is all the more remarkable therefore that his Gloria which, like most of his music, was lost until the 1920s should today have become one of his best-known works and a cornerstone of the modern choral repertoire.

In this concert the solo parts will be performed by members of the choir, while the orchestra will contribute Handel’s concerto in D major.
The concert will take place on 28 June at 1pm in the Hub Theatre at The Open University's Walton Hall campus.

Admission is free by ticket, bookable in advance via
