Family Cycling

Milton Keynes is a great place for family to enjoy cycling together. A unique combination of safe cycling routes and fantastic views and attractions make the city a cyclist’s paradise just waiting to be discovered.

  • Redways - these are a network of over 270 km of safe paths that criss-cross the entire city of Milton Keynes used by cyclists and walkers. They allow you to ride away from the traffic and discover the hidden treasures Milton Keynes has to offer. They are ideal for children or novice cyclists to ride safely and build their confidence. Free Redway guides are available from the Council Offices, The Parks Trust and many local cycle shops.
  • Leisure routes – in addition to the Redways there is also 70km of leisure routes that follow the path of rivers and canals, go around beautiful lakes and pass through some historic woodland and parkland. The majority are reasonably level making it easier for children to navigate them.
  • Willen Lake -  Willen welcomes over one million visitors each year and is ideal for a spot of family cycling. The path around the South Lake is approximately 1.75 miles (or 3.25 miles for both lakes) and they are wide with a firm, all weather surface. It is located just two minutes drive from Jct 14, M1 and nearby car parks make it easily accessible. There are many other activities to try while you’re there including crazy golf, cable-tow wakeboarding, sailing, kayaking, high ropes adventure course, mini ride-on train and there are several play areas. You can take a break at the picnic areas or grab a coffee or ice cream at the shop, or have a meal at the lakeside pub. Bike hire is available during the summer months.
  • Campbell Park – close to the main shopping centre Campbell Park is the city’s very own ‘Central Park’. You can cycle around this landscaped area and explore the Water Gardens, the Woodland Ridge or the Pond, but be careful as you might find some of the city’s sheep grazing in the meadowland. You can also join the sculpture trail and discover some of the amazing public works of art scattered through the park.
  • Take the weight off – when you’re a family out for a bike ride, plenty of stops are needed to keep the children amused and engaged. Milton Keynes has a lot to offer – you can see cows made of concrete, picnic next to real sheep, have a meal or a drink in one of the many traditional pubs along the routes, feed wild birds on the many lakes and rivers, and much, much more.
  • Enjoy the countryside – just outside Milton Keynes you’ll find some fantastic woodland suitable for some family-friendly mountain biking. Get well away from any traffic and off the roads to explore the trails and bridleways of the great outdoors.
