Pedalling Culture

Pedalling CulturePromoting the wealth of culture within Milton Keynes is at the heart of Pedalling Culture. The mission of the project is to ensure that every community across Milton Keynes realises the culturally diverse city we live in, and the fact that these cultural destinations can be reached from the many green transport links we have available to us.

There are over 280 miles of Redway routes zigzagging their way through the city, plus ongoing initiatives to develop specific green transport methods, ensuring that everyone has sustainable access to our cultural venues.

  • Culture and green transportation is at the heart of Pedalling Culture. As a council run initiative we have been created with the aid of funding from the Arts Council England’s Cultural Destination projects. Our partners include Milton Keynes Council, Destination MK, MK Gallery, Bletchley Park Trust and MK City Centre Management.
  • As part of Pedalling Culture’s green agenda to develop sustainable transportation, the project is working in conjunction with the Electric Vehicle Experience Centre (EVEC) to encourage the take up of electric vehicles.
  • Pedalling Culture will work with our partners to increase access for both residents and visitors to hire bicycles from already well developed programmes such as Santander Cycles MK, while developing new trails and routes for walkers, runners and cyclists alike.
  • Pedalling Culture will also create a series of locally influenced events throughout the year which will appeal to the whole family, from cycling to walking with a cultural infusion thrown in!
  • While our residents are at the heart of Pedalling Culture, it is important that we put our city on the map as a cultural destination. As a result we will be launching a destination programme which will include tailor made packages that will appeal to people across all walks of life. These will incorporate our cultural spaces, cycle routes, green transportation links, and, of course, our famous landmarks.

Visit Milton Keynes and explore one of our 3 new Cultural Routes packages.

These three bespoke overnight packages are designed to take you on a journey of discovery across Milton Keynes, visiting popular art and heritage venues as well as discovering the more hidden gems.  All include return train travel Milton Keynes, an overnight stay with breakfast and will show you there is more to Milton Keynes than meets the eye...

History and Heritage Package
On arrival by train at Bletchley station, you will be given an induction in an electric car which you’ll have for your entire stay. After driving your electric vehicle to The Cowper and Newton Museum, you can enjoy a tour of the museum. Here, you can experience the fascinating Georgian domestic life of poet William Cowper and his neighbor, John Newton. The birthplace of Amazing Grace and The Olney Hymns, the Museum transports visitors back in time with its numerous personal artefacts.

From the Museum, you’ll drive your own leased Electric Vehicle, to De Vere Horwood Hotel, on the west side of Milton Keynes. With its distinctive russet bricks, imported from the Netherlands, the mansion house at De Vere Horwood Estate was built in 1911 as a country residence for the Denny family, and has been welcoming guests ever since. A highlight of your stay will be a tour of the Pytheas Gardens: the estate was the birthplace of famous gardener, Percy Thrower, and your tour will include an insight into his family’s life. Following dinner, bed and breakfast, a tour of Milton Keynes’ top heritage attraction, Bletchley Park, which was once the top-secret home of the World War Two Codebreakers, will conclude the trip on Sunday.

The cost of the package represents a saving of 25% against booking individual trip elements.

Cycle the city
This package includes overnight accommodation at renowned National Badminton Centre, home to the GB team. On arrival by train into MK Central, you will be met by Santander bikes, where you will cycle straight to the Ride High Equestrian Centre. Take a tour of the stable yard and then get up close with the Ponys.

From there onto the picturesque, Loughton Lodge Lake. With bed and breakfast included in the package, guests will also receive a tour of the badminton museum and a led cycle ride (approx 4 miles) through North Loughton Valley Park on the second day to visit the city’s famed Concrete Cows as well as he site of our Roman Villa and Benedictine Abbey.

New City, New Culture
This package starts when your train brings you to Milton Keynes Central Station – often heralded for being the set of the United Nations in the movie Superman IV.  A guided walk from the station to your hotel will draw your attention to the unique quirks, fascinating design elements and unexpected cultural assets. The tour is a must for culture buffs, architecture scholars, and anyone with an interest in how one of the UK’s fastest growing cities can be created in just 50 years.

Your accommodation includes dinner, bed and breakfast, in one of the city’s first hotels – Holiday Inn. This building is steeped in architectural intrigue and your stay will include a fascinating behind the scenes tour.

No trip to Milton Keynes would be complete without a visit to one of the UK’s leading theatre or music venues – both Milton Keynes Theatre and The Stables are industry leaders in the live touring theatre and music scenes respectively. We have a wide range of shows to select from ranging from Cilla The Musical, at MK Theatre, or enjoy tribute band The Best of Queen ft. The Bohemians at The Stables. The package concludes with a cycle, on Santander bicycles, along a unique City Centre public art trail through Campbell Park, as well as a guided tour of some of the key “new city” landmarks which tell the Milton Keynes story.
