THE MARATHON COMES TO MILTON KEYNES
On Sunday 29 April 2012 a major new marathon come to Milton Keynes. Nearly 5,000 runners will make their way around the gruelling 26.2 mile course.
Race Route
This is a city marathon with a difference. With 4,500 acres of woodlands, lakesides, parks and landscaped areas within the city boundary, Milton Keynes is the ideal venue for a Green Marathon. The course is traffic free on closed roads and cycle paths or “redways” as they are known locally, and without any significant incline there is real PB potential for all participants.

Big Finish with Celebrity Appeal
Runners and spectators will enjoy an electric atmosphere at the finish of the race inside the state of the art Stadium MK, home of Milton Keynes Dons FC. With plenty more entertainment en route this will be a race to remember. Olympic Marathon runner and Commonwealth Games medallist Liz Yelling will be starting the Milton Keynes Marathon and is excited about the new event. “It’s great to see an exciting new Marathon coming to Milton Keynes”, says Liz, “This lovely course offers real potential for both beginners and experienced runners to have a great race”.
Official Backing
The event has the backing of Milton Keynes Council, the MK Parks Trust, Milton Keynes Dons FC and Destination Milton Keynes, the city’s official tourism and information provider. Many businesses from the local area have become involved as event sponsors or will be participating in the Corporate Relay to run alongside the main race. The organisers are applying for a UK Athletics licence and the event will be run under UKA rules.

At its inception in 1967 only 60,000 lived and 21,000 people worked in what’s now the Borough of Milton Keynes. Today, 236,700 live and over 130,000 work in this thriving, young and modern city. Communications are excellent and competitors in the race will find travel and accommodation in Milton Keynes easy and convenient. Seven of the city’s sporting venues have been chosen as Olympic training camps for the 2012 London games.

Charity
The official event charity for the Milton Keynes Marathon is MK Dons Sports and Education Trust (SET). SET aims to provide a positive football and sports experience for children of all ages and backgrounds and offers support for minority and ethnic groups through the MK Dons study support centre for development of numeracy and literacy skills. MK Marathon wants as many charities as possible to have the opportunity of raising funds via the race. Five Hundred charity places have been released and runners with their own ballot place are also encouraged to raise money for the charity of their choice. Charities will be out in force around the course and at the finish supporting their runners, hoping to have a big grand total of funds raised to announce after the event.
