If you’re the outdoor type, Milton Keynes is the place for you. But with over 4,500 acres of parkland, woodland, lakes and rivers, you might need some help deciding what to do. Our suggested itineraries will get you out in the open air and show you where to start.
Going for the day ...
Begin your day in the city centre and take the short walk to Campbell Park. Strolling through this beautiful parkland, you can follow the Art Trail to discover some amazing sculptures and water features. Return to thecentre:mk for lunch at Giraffe, then off to Willen Lake for more fresh air and fun. For thrillseekers, there is cable-tow water-skiing to try, or why not take to the treetops at Aerial Extreme? For people who want to keep their feet on the ground, wander around the lake to the Peace Pagoda and discover the spiritual Medicine Wheel. Finish the day with a meal in The Swan, a traditional country pub in Milton Keynes Village.
Staying for the weekend ...
Take to the redways to visit our most famous residents, the concrete cows at Bancroft - children might enjoy sharing a picnic with these bovine characters. A five-minute walk will take you to Bradwell Abbey where you can see the medieval chapel and read about the monks who lived there. A relaxing afternoon could be spent fishing the many lakes and rivers or on the Grand Union Canal which meanders through many of the old Buckinghamshire villages in this area.
Staying for longer ...
North of Milton Keynes you’ll find Emberton Park near Olney where you can spend a whole day cycling, fishing, sailing and canoeing to your heart’s content. Perhaps you'd like to take a trip on a narrowboat from Stoke Bruerne or a stroll down the towpath to find a traditional canalside pub is more your style? And if you’ve still got the energy, the extensive redway system, covering over 300km within the city, allows safe access for walking, cycling, roller-blading or horse-riding.
