Whittlebury Day Spa Review

Whittlebury ParkIt’s September, the kids are back to school and you’re back into the daily routine of schools runs, making packed lunches and keeping on top of the huge piles of washing that children seem to generate…but what if you could step out of the routine for just one day?

We got to try out the Whittlebury Park ‘Back to School’ Recharge Spa Day and do just that but what did we think…

If you’ve never been to Whittlebury Park before or never been on a Spa Day before, you have to go with the right mindset. Leave everything at the big glass doors as you step into a world of relaxation for the day. Whittlebury is an imposing country house style hotel, spa and conference centre set out in the Northamptonshire countryside just 20 minutes drive from Central Milton Keynes.

The Spa is set within a separate area of the building, so you never get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the hotel, which is all part of it’s charm. The moment you arrive, the staff greet you with a warm, knowing smile…they know, you’re going to leave relaxed, chilled and wanting more.

They offer many different Day Spa packages but the current ‘Back to School Recharge Day’ includes full use of the Heat and Ice experiences (more later), the leisure club including a gym and swimming pool, a two course buffet lunch and a choice of treatments (again, more later) – all for just £99* for two people.

We went with high expectations and were not disappointed. First up, after checking in – we actually headed to the gym…we managed to sweat through 10 minutes on the cross-trainer before looking wilfully at each other and deciding without really saying a word that was more than enough…take us to the Spa!

You’re given a lovely white bathrobe to wear all day (which is a bit weird when eating lunch, but everyone’s in the same boat, so you just go with it) and towels are also provided. We headed to the Heat & Ice experience first to enjoy a huge hydrotherapy pool with various jets to help relax those aching school run muscles plus you can try out various experiences such as a salt steam room, a crystal sauna, experience showers, foot spas, an ice cave, and more…all designed to “…stimulate your circulation and senses, whilst aiding the elimination of toxins and exfoliating your skin…” – we get the point and we’re sure it worked, but we spent most of the time giggling after putting crushed ice down our swimming costumes!

We then moved upstairs to the ‘waiting area’ where you wait for your name to be called and your dedicated treatment to begin. We’d chosen an Elemis Facial and a Foot Massage between us and both were around 25 minutes long and felt divine. You can also order drinks in the waiting area; anything from coffee and smoothies through to full on cocktails and bottles of Prosecco.

There’s a huge array of lotions and products available around the lounge meaning you can top up after your facial or try out any other products that take your fancy!  With so many brands and options available we could have spent all day just trying to make our skin super soft!

After that it was time for lunch; it’s buffet style with a huge choice of hot and cold food available from jacket potatoes, smoked chicken, hot soup, salmon, salads and more. We were a little disappointed with the dessert offer – just fruit salad, but this is a spa, so maybe not the place for a huge slab of sticky toffee pudding (although that would have been nice).

During the afternoon we spotted a number of people enjoying a delicious looking afternoon tea so perhaps next time we’ll get one of those booked to enjoy whilst we’re there – that would fit the dessert bill and satisfy our sweet cravings.

Once lunch was done – we decided to hit the ‘relaxation room’ – it basically does exactly what it says on the tin, a large-ish room dimly lit with around 20 wooden style beds and duvets for you to relax in. Soothing music plays through the speaker system, and it was truly blissful until someone’s mobile phone jumped into life playing Peter Andre’s Mysterious Girl as it’s very loud ringtone. Cue much panicking and fumbling from its owner and a fair amount of sniggering from us…but we drifted quickly back off.

After an hour’s worth of snoozing – we hit the swimming pool for a quick dip and a try of the steam room which after just 5 minutes felt like we were literally melting from the inside out. We then headed back up to the waiting area to eek out as much as possible from the day, ordering ourselves a very yummy chocolate milkshake to top off what was the most relaxing day we’d both had in…well, actually neither of us could remember ??

Overall, it was exceptional value for money and something that could be enjoyed by friends, partners, mother and daughters…anyone who wants/needs time to just shut the outside world out for eight hours and truly relax in the most welcoming of environments.

If every weekend could be spent at the spa the world would be a much brighter, more relaxed place!
