Missoula Montana Review

Missoula Milton KeynesNow we had absolutely no idea what to expect from Missoula Montana Bar & Grill as although Missoula has other bars around the UK, the restaurant is the very first in the UK. The unusual name comes from a city in Montana, North America. So their decor is very American, but not glitzy and brash, it’s more homely with a country feel (they have antlers as chandeliers).

The relaxed bar area is downstairs with the main seated restaurant upstairs overlooking Central Milton Keynes. Their menu is inspired by ‘Big Sky Country’ with wholesome dishes that really just jump out at you and make you want to order them.

But first we took a look at the drinks menu while our waiter dropped off a lovely bowl of warm popcorn for us to enjoy - different, but actually rather nice. The drinks menu is vast with signature cocktails with ingredients we’d never heard of like ‘Huckleberry’ puree and Bison Grass vodka. They also do a mean list of shakes, which read more like a dessert menu.

The food menu is also very American but again not in a generic way. Yes, there are burgers and steaks but the way they are presented is definitely different. The choice of starters is pretty varied with chicken wings, baby back ribs and sliders (mini burger selection) and the odd healthy option with an oriental salad. They even have a lightly battered giant pickle, the mind boggles!

We chose the deep fried shrimp done in a tom yum tempura batter served with a tangy cocktail sauce, and a baby Caesar salad. Both were delicious; the shrimp was incredibly light and the sauce really hit the mark. The salad was crispy and came served with the traditional anchovies and croutons.

For the mains we had a hard time choosing  - maybe the Bison medallion steak, the fresh sea trout, the wonderfully named ‘Beartooth Burger’ or maybe one of the ‘Hanging Skewers’. Nope...we went for the 8oz Rump Steak, on the basis that “if they can’t get this right, then they have no hope” and the full rack of the tender slow-cooked pork ribs, smothered in a gorgeous BBQ sauce. Both were superb, we simply couldn’t fault them. The steak was cooked medium to perfection and tasted delicious and the meat just fell off the ribs and the sauce really did just melt in the mouth. But we both agreed the very best part was the home-style crispy onions; we cannot stress how much you have to try these!

After these pretty healthy sized portions, we waited a while before daring to take on dessert, but take them on we did. Again the American influence shines through with warm cookie dough ice cream or even a special available on the day of ‘Huckleberry Eton Mess’. We finally decided on the Key Lime Cheesecake and the Warm Cherry Pie. The cheesecake was full of flavour but not overpowering and the individual cherry pie came served on a warm skillet and the pastry was topped with baked sugar “just like mom used to make” – simply yummy.

Missoula really did surprise us, something very different to the marketplace in Milton Keynes. The food was really good, we struggled to find fault with anything. So if you’re looking for a relaxed night out with friends or family with some truly heart-warming food to tantalise the taste buds, you won’t go far wrong with Missoula Montana - God Bless America!
