Young entrepreneur stays in pole position

Date Posted:11/07/2017

Simply RaceDestination Milton Keynes isn’t short of innovative businesses amongst its membership, and Simply Race is no exception.

The indoor racing simulation and training centre in Stacey Bushes is owned by Ben Turner who scooped the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award earlier this year at the Milton Keynes Business Achievement Awards (MKBAA).  We caught up with him four months on from his big win to see how the award had changed things for both himself personally and for the company.

“I was shocked to win the award as the other nominees were so strong, but was delighted to bring it home!  In terms of the business, we’ve seen a 30/40% increase in sales since the awards…summer is normally a quieter time for us as an indoor attraction, but we’re currently seeing levels of customers that we’d only expect in the winter.”

Simply Race is a perfect attraction for corporate days out and parties, with 15 linked racing simulators to enable the whole team to race against one another.  Ben added: “We’ve seen a real uplift in corporate bookings since winning the award – the ceremony was a really good networking opportunity.”

Ben started Simply Race from scratch – having previously worked in a similar field for another operator, he hit upon an idea and, like all true entrepreneurs, set about making it a reality. He set the business up in 12 months after finding the perfect location in Stacey Bushes.

The attraction offers an immersive racing experience, so much more than just traditional computer game style driving.  Customers can just walk up and race, although Ben recommends pre-booking as the increase in trade is leaving fewer walk up slots available.  You can race from as little as £8 per person, but if you fancy taking it to the next level, it won’t be long before you can experience the thrill of Formula 1.

Ben commented, “We’re just about to launch our Virtual Reality Formula 1 experience…it’s more than your average simulator, it’s of a standard that drivers can use to train for actual races.  It’s really going to take Simply Race to the next level.”

Talking about Ben’s award win, Nicholas Mann, a director of MKBAA organisers Milton Keynes Business Leaders Partnership (MKBLP) said: “Ben is a fantastic example of the young entrepreneurial talent that Milton Keynes has to offer. This is exactly the reason that we, along with other partners, established the awards in 2014. We would like to congratulate Ben on winning the award, we hope Simply Race continues to go from strength-to-strength, and who knows, maybe one day we’ll be presenting him with an MKBAA Lifetime Achievement Award!”
