The Parks Trust’s 2014 Photography Competition aimed to highlight the beautiful and diverse landscapes of Milton Keynes, which included adult and youth prizes for three categories, Wildlife, Landscape and Parklife.
Amateur photographer Jim Key, Olney, Milton Keynes won the overall prize for his stunning sunset shot of the frozen Grand Union Canal in winter (right). The image of the frozen canal was taken on the bridge adjoining Stonepit Field in Great Linford, Milton Keynes. This image was also chosen as the winner for the Parklife category.
Jim received £350 in Calumet Photographic vouchers; he said: "I commute to work by bicycle and first saw this scene when I rode past in the morning. I was struck by the narrow boats frozen into the canal but also, with smoke coming from their chimneys, how cosy it must be inside.
“I checked the weather forecast, looking for a sunrise, and came back by car the following morning to take the photograph. I had to wait for what seemed an age before the sun broke through to give the nice light but it turned out okay. I just made it into work on time! Congratulations to all the other winners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the wonderful work you do for the preservation of the parks for us all to enjoy."
David Foster, Chief Executive of The Parks Trust, added: “What a great atmospheric shot! In the spring this is a great place to start a walk or bike ride - Stanton Low, River Gt Ouse and Linford Lakes Nature Reserve just to the north; wildflowers growing on Stonepit Field just to the west; Blackhorse Wood to the east and Gt Linford Manor Park just along the canal to the South.”
The Parks Trust received over 90 entries to the competition; all entries were carefully considered by a panel of judges from The Parks Trust, Destination MK and New City Photographic Society.
