Mayor of MK flies in for Birdhouse visit

Date Posted:20/01/2016

intu MK birdhouseThe Big Birdhouse tour at intu Milton Keynes received a special visitor to the attraction this week as the Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr Keith McClean, was given a tour of the exhibition.

The Big Birdhouse tour, in association with the RSPB, remains at intu Milton Keynes until the end of January and has received thousands of visitors, including school groups, bird enthusiast and members of the public.

The tour comprises of 15 larger than life birdhouses on the malls; each one has been individually and artfully designed by well-known British talent to raise money and awareness for the RSPB. The project works to fuse art with life and nature via a 16-month national exhibition across all intu shopping centres.

The Mayor of Milton Keynes said: “I was not sure what to expect but as we progressed around the Big Bird Boxes we were delighted by each of them. The different styles reflected the celebrity associated with each box. It was good to learn that intu Milton Keynes had already had several visits from school parties and that shoppers were showing a lot of interest. Truly an innovative and inspiring roadshow; well done intu!”

Celebrities involved in the project include: The One Show’s Alex Jones, Olympic gold medallist Becky Adlington and silver medallist Iwan Thomas, wildlife TV presenters Steve Backshall and Miranda Krestovnikoff, comedian Vic Reeves and BBC Radio Two DJ, Jo Whiley, among others. Following intu’s partnership with The Beano last summer, the artists from the infamous comic have created their own birdhouse too.

Official RSPB pin badges and nest boxes are on sale from the customer information desk throughout January in a bid to raise money.

Shelley Peppard, general manager at intu Milton Keynes, says: “a huge thank you to the Mayor of Milton Keynes for coming to support this important project. The response from the public has been fantastic and it’s great to see people of all ages take an interest in nature.”
