Army of volunteers needed for MK Marathon

Date Posted:10/04/2014

Milton Keynes MarathonA small army of volunteers is needed to make Skechers Performance Milton Keynes Marathon and Geoffrey Leaver Corporate Challenge happen and ensure all the participants have a fantastic time.

In 2013 hundreds of volunteers got involved and had a great time making the Skechers Performance Milton Keynes Marathon a wonderful success for both runners and spectators and in doing so helped the event be named amongst the top 10 marathon races in the UK by readers of Runner’s World magazine and website.

The new MKM Half Marathon has been added to the event for 2014, which like the marathon is on a traffic-free course and finishes in StadiumMK. The 2014 event also includes the ever popular Superhero Fun Run and the Geoffrey Leaver Corporate Team Relay. As a result, this year race organisers are looking to put together an even bigger volunteer team to help guide the runners around the course, see them across the finish line and help local residents.

People are needed for a variety of roles including marshalling along the route, helping out at the start and finish, manning the drink stations, providing entertainment and helping in the baggage area.

Among those who have already signed up to volunteer is Gareth, who also volunteered in 2013, “I loved the experience last year. I had an awesome team to help me out, and it was great to be encouraging all the runners.”

Also helping out is Angela. “I am volunteering for the first time. I’ve never run a marathon; I was only training for a half, but I felt if I volunteered I could cheer on the runners, and hopefully make a difference to their Milton Keynes experience.”

Kassia is also volunteering, “For me, it’s a family affair; I’ll be handing out medals on the finish line with my two daughters. They’re so excited about hanging medals around the runners’ necks they can’t wait for race day.”

Race Director, Andy Hully, said, “We couldn’t put on the event without the support of our volunteers. We really do appreciate the fact that people willingly give up their time to help up make the MK Marathon one of the top 10 marathons in the UK. "We have lots of opportunities this year for people join in and really make a difference to those that are running.”

All volunteers will be provided with refreshments and, in addition to a huge thank you from Milton Keynes Marathon event team, they will also receive an event crew t-shirt and an invitation to the Volunteers party on Saturday 10th May in Milton Keynes. Volunteers for the event should be aged 16 or over, although younger children can help out if they are supervised by an adult who is also registered to volunteer.

Online registration for individual volunteers and groups is available. Groups of friends, family, Scouts, Girl Guides, running groups and local football teams are particularly welcomed. Groups of volunteers should add their club, company or charity when they register, and they’ll be placed as close together as possible. “Volunteers don’t need to be experienced, as they’ll be fully briefed on their role before the day. They just need lots of enthusiasm and enjoy working as part of a team. The great thing about volunteering is that people can also make new friends or support local and national charities," said Mr Hully.
