Wild food for free in Milton Keynes
Published - Monday, 21 September, 2009
September and the beginning of Autumn is alive with colour and the bounty of nature. Join The Parks Trust and discover wild food for free. Orchard fruits, of apple, pears and plums, are ripening, the hedgerows are bursting with sloes, blackberries and elderberries and mushrooms are sprouting up in weird and wonderful shapes. Join The Parks Trust on its Food for Free event to discover what you can harvest locally.

Taking place on Saturday 26 September, 10.30am-1.00pm, this event will help you to safely identify edible fruits and mushrooms. You’ll be able to scrump for eating and cooking apples from the Trust’s community orchard at Woughton Orchard and take part in some crafty appley fun. You’ll also be able to take home your harvest and make pies, chutney or jam.  The event is free and is suitable for adults and children.

Alternatively join the Trust’s rangers and the Environment Agency and see how many American crayfish you can catch at Crayfish Day. Taking place on Sunday 27 September, 10.30am-12.30pm, you’ll be able to fish for the American crayfish and a local expert from the Environment Agency will demonstrate how these invasive species can make a tasty meal.

Not to be confused with native white-clawed crayfish, which are protected, the American signal crayfish is an invasive species in our waters and aggressively pushes out native crayfish. This event costs £3, is suitable for older children (11-15 years) and takes place at Millfield, Stony Stratford.

Places on the Crayfish event must be booked in advance by calling The Parks Trust on 01908 255379 or visit www.theparkstrust.com for further information.
