Six months on from the replacement of the local radio station for Milton Keynes with a national and regional service, a team of former Heart FM staff have announced exciting plans to launch a new radio station for the local community.

MKFMThe Beat Of MK - MKFM will be launching in July with a month long trial broadcast on 107 FM as part of a campaign for a permanent FM license.

The radio station will be a local service in every sense, with all programmes coming from studios at Xscape and a full service of local news, traffic and travel, school closures and sports results.

MKFM will feature a fresh mix of current music with artists like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, JLS and the Black Eyed Peas and will support the local music scene.

Charities in Milton Keynes will benefit from on air coverage of fundraising events like the Midnight Moo – Melanie Harriss from Willen Hospice explained: “Willen Hospice, and other charities in Milton Keynes, rely heavily on the support of the local media to help to publicise their fundraising activities so that they are successful and bring in much-needed income. Radio is great at doing this as it is immediate and, in my experience, has never failed to help to gain public interest in the activities we are undertaking.”

MKFM’s branding has been put together by leading local design agency Interdirect. MD Nick Mann explained why they are getting behind the station: “Interdirect prides itself on being an exciting, vibrant and innovative new media agency, and has always believed in supporting other ventures that share these qualities.  MKFM is one of these ventures; a great idea and a vital innovation for Milton Keynes’ local and business community, which will be an asset to the region and is something Interdirect is very proud to support.”

Local businesses will also benefit from very affordable advertising rates on the new station – former Heart FM sales manager, Zoe Elie is excited about her new role with MKFM: “This is a great opportunity to offer local companies the chance to reach an under 30s audience and at the same time, support the community.”

Xscape are lending their support to the project by giving the station a high profile home.  Marketing Manager Steven Gordon-Wilson explained: “MKFM sounds like an amazing new venture for the city, and Xscape are proud to be a part of it.  Milton Keynes is such a fantastic place to play, eat and shop, there can never be too many people shouting about it.”

MKFM want to involve as many members of the local community as possible and are keen to hear from people who would like to volunteer with the station, especially young people who will be offered professional training and experience which could lead to a broadcasting career.
