New Coachway set to open in December

The new Coachway building enters the final stage of development this week as Milton Keynes Council has handed over the building to the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to start the final fit out work prior to the opening to the public on 13 December.

Milton Keynes CoachwayThe redevelopment of the Coachway is part of a £2.6m partnership project delivered by Milton Keynes Council on HCA land. The facility will be leased and operated by National Express Group. Funding for the project has been provided by the HCA and the Department for Transport.

The building features a striking roof canopy giving a covered external seating area for passengers; in addition to a new indoor heated waiting area with customer information screens, a café, shop and ticket office.

The Coachway is also a gateway for commuters to travel to central Milton Keynes and on to other local destinations. The site will also have staffed 24 hour security and a CCTV covered parking area.

Tim Roxburgh, Director of the HCA’s Milton Keynes Partnership, said, “The Milton Keynes Coachway is one of the busiest coach interchange in the country and is an important gateway into the city. This new facility provides passengers with a comfortable and safe environment while travelling.”

Cllr Vanessa McPake, cabinet member for Transport, said: “I’m delighted to be handing over the building to the HCA.  This is a milestone in the development of the Coachway.  I look forward to the formal opening.”

Stuart Parker, Property Director for National Express said, “We are delighted that we are now able to commence the final fit out and look forward to providing a high quality facility for customers.”

The final fit out work includes the completion of signage, lighting and the fittings for the retail units. The Coachway building was designed by architects D5 with the construction carried out MK based company ROK.
