Mickey Rooney has been in the limelight for over 85 years when at 17 months old, his talent surfaced by accident. While hiding underneath a shoeshine stand in a Chicago theatre, fascinated by his father's act, he let out a sneeze. The noise caused a spotlight to find him in the crowd. Not knowing what to do he stood up and blew on his tiny toy mouth organ that was hanging on a string around his neck. The audience erupted with laughter. The show's manager got him a pint-sized tuxedo after the incident, and young Mickey began performing small ballads and speeches on stage. Since then Mickey has not looked back.
During his illustrious Hollywood career Mickey has ppeared in literally hundreds of films and TV shows including timeless classics such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and not forgetting a vast array of stage roles . Mickey may be best known for his work as the Andy Hardy character which began with A Family Affair in 1939 and following massive success continued through a further 13 films. The same year, he made his first film alongside Judy Garlnd. Garland and Rooney became close friends and a successful song and dance team. Besides three of the Andy Hardy films, where she portrayed Betsy Booth, a younger girl with a crush on Andy, they appeared together in a string of successful musicals, including the Oscar nominated Babes in Arms.
Rooney has had one of the longest careers of any actor. He earned an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, a special Juvenile Oscar he shared with Deana Durbin in 1939, five Oscar nominations, one Emmy Award, five Emmy Nominations and two Golden Globes.
