Published - Wednesday, 01 June, 2011
The legendary Mascot Olympics is back for another year on Saturday 11 June 2011 but this year it is part of bigger and better Family Fun day.

Mascot Olympics 2011The Theatre District Family Fun day is a FREE event but includes activities that ask for donations with all proceeds going to the Milton Keynes Play Association.

Aimed at families, the event includes everything from a funfair; parkour (free running) and dance workshops to arts and craft, junk modelling, face painting and loads of other fun activities – plus a penalty shootout with fab prizes. Throughout the day, the famous Mascot Olympics will take place starting at 11.30am and will include events such as ‘Welling Wanging’; ‘The Test of Strength’; ‘Penalty Shootout’ and the ‘Obstacle Challenge’.

So far we have over 25 mascots attending including local favourites such as Donnie and Mooie; Build a Bear; Flo from Willen Hospice, MK Lightening Pucky who won most entertaining mascot last year and of course past winner Gully from Gulliver’s Land.  We also have our regular football club attendees Captain Blade from Sheffield United, Bartley Blue from Cardiff City, Kingsley the Lion from Reading FC and Hangus from Hartlepool to name a few plus quite a few new hairy / feathered friends.

The day will begin at 11am Saturday with all events taking place within the Theatre District. MK Parkour, the free runners, have confirmed their attendance as have dance act Desperate2Dance.  Both will perform through the day and hold a lunchtime workshop.  We also have first aid workshops running through the day and these will be suitable for children as well as adults so a great opportunity to learn or refresh a vital.

Organisers have chosen Milton Keynes Play Association, a local children’s charity to support this year. MKPA is celebrating 40 years of supporting children’s play and play development in Milton Keynes. Its most public face is seen delivering many hundreds of  free play sessions across MK during the summer holidays, but behind the scenes MKPA supports the children’s workforce in schools, afterschool clubs, uniformed groups, faith groups and community groups with training and resources to ensure the children in MK have the best possible play opportunities.

Sara Mills, marketing and communications manager for the Theatre District who is organising the event, said; “This event promises carnage and chaos galore as the mascots attempt the many challenges thrown at them through the day.  This is a wonderful event for all the family and we hope local people will come, get involved and support this fantastic free event.”

Any organisations that want to become involved and maybe have a stall at the event or enter a mascot, contact Sara on sara.mills@theatre-district.co.uk
