Bletchley Park digs for victory

Bletchley Park launches exciting new initiative to produce its own food. Most people will be familiar with the World War Two expression, ‘Digging for victory’, which encouraged people to grow their own food, rather than rely on food imported by ships across the Atlantic that were vulnerable to attack by German U-boats. Here at Bletchley Park, workers also dug for victory to support the war effort but today we are digging to reduce our carbon footprint.

Bletchley Park is gathering together a team of volunteers to create our own kitchen garden that will supply fresh fruit and vegetables to our restaurant.  Fruit and veg are frequently flown in from overseas and as we know, air travel is one of the biggest carbon producers, giving these products high food miles (the distance food travels before arriving on your plate).

So, from spring onwards we hope to be serving fresh fruit and vegetables in our restaurant with no food miles attached.  If you fancy getting your hands dirty, why not come along and join our team of kitchen garden volunteers?  All are welcome to join in or contribute, from keen gardeners and enthusiastic first timers to allotment societies and garden centres.  Call Bletchley Park on 01908 640404 for more information.
