Record Turnout for NP Muster

Nothing, not even squally weather conditions, austerity measures and England’s kick-off in the Rugby World Cup, stopped walkers from taking it all in their stride at this year’s Newport Muster.

A record entry of 526 signed up for Saturday’s (Sept 10) annual walkabout on four sign-posted routes around the ancient town and its neighbouring Ouse Valley.

Entrants included Alan Richards, the mayor of Milton  Keynes, and Wendy Egan, mayor of Newport Pagnell, who sportingly walked one course still wearing their civic chains of office.  Among the largest teams was this one named “Sharpe as Mustard” (correct).

The walking festival is centred on Bury Field, the town’s 1000-year-old Common and themed on its role as one of Cromwell’s most important garrisons in the Civil War. It is endorsed by a variety of local organisations and is supported by the MK Community Foundation.
